Re-Makers
Turning local waste into useful building materials.
Re-Makers is the making lab at GRaB Eco Park. On an island, waste is expensive to ship away — so we work on the other end of the problem, testing how plastic, glass and other discarded materials can be shredded, crushed and pressed into sheets, tiles and components that are useful for building.
Everything is done openly. Trials, failures and results are shared at workshops and public events so that others can make and build the same way.
Circular Economy Grant, 2024
Re-Makers is supported by a 2024 Circular Economy Grant from DETSI, provided through Smart Precinct NQ, to trial the making of building materials from waste.
The grant funded our first equipment:
- A flat sheet press (hot and cold) for forming panels and tiles
- A glass crusher for turning bottles into usable aggregate and sand
- A shredder for processing waste plastic into feedstock

Material trials — hexagonal tiles
First tile trials pressing local waste streams — glass cullet, eggshell, glass powder and coffee grounds — into resin-bound hexagonal tiles.

From waste to feedstock
We shred local plastic collected on Magnetic Island so it can be pressed into flat sheets and moulded into useful building components.

Pieces for our shop
Small items made from shredded local plastic are for sale at Cafe Nourish in Horseshoe Bay.
